I turned to my spouse and said, “How does anyone fall for that?” Turns out—we did everything “right”… and still got scammed. We hired a licensed contractor. We verified their insurance, asked all the smart questions, and signed with confidence. But almost a year later, all we had to show for it was a giant hole in our backyard—and a builder who vanished with our deposit.

We were heartbroken. A call to the Arizona Registrar of Contractors revealed the builder had done the same thing to at least 26 other families. Knowing we weren’t alone didn’t make it hurt any less.
